FORT WORTH, Texas—Wit, cunning and hypocrisy are on full display in this punk-rock remake of Moliere’s classic 17th-century farce. Written and directed by local theater artist Ashley H. White, the swift, unapologetic tale chronicles a man who deploys his charm and feigned piety in an attempt to disrupt a household.
Imposter! Hypocrite! TARTUFFE! delves deep into human desires and power dynamics, offering a fresh take on the vintage comedy.
The story takes place in the home of the wealthy Orgon, where Tartuffe — a fraud and a pious imposter — has insinuated himself. He succeeds in winning Orgon’s devotion, then tries to marry the man’s daughter, seduce his wife and scrounge the deed to the property.
The scheme proves no match for the astute women of the family, who decide to beat him at his own game. Tartuffe considers himself a master of deception, but he seriously underestimates his targets (or perhaps overestimates his own abilities).
He nearly gets away with it, except an emissary from King Louis XIV arrives in time to recover the property, free Monsieur Orgon and haul Tartuffe off to jail. His duplicity is finally exposed, but not before the author has examined evil in the guise of religious fervor and the dangers awaiting those who believe only what they choose despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary.
