TCC Planning for Campus Carry Implementation in 2017

Tarrant County College, one of the 20 largest colleges academic institutions in the United States, is continuing to study the implications of the Texas “Campus Carry” law for the District. The law mandates that public institutions recognize the rights of concealed handgun license holders to enter designated buildings with their weapons.

While studying implementation for the past year, TCC officials sought clarification from the Texas Attorney General’s office regarding some components of the law, in particular to address issues that accommodate the diverse needs, student population and programs found on TCC campuses and of many other community colleges across the state.

Community colleges must implement the mandated Campus Carry legislation by Aug. 1, 2017. In the interim, all firearms are prohibited on TCC campuses, and anyone suspecting a violation of that policy should immediately call the TCC Police Department.

The state’s four-year public colleges and universities were required to implement the new law Aug. 1, 2016, while private institutions had the option to opt out of implementation of the new law.
