FORT WORTH, Texas (Apr. 27, 2012)
Tarrant County College Fire Service Training Center (FSTC) will graduate its first class led by a female class captain when Day Class #65 graduates. Janet Onim, 38, was selected captain shortly after the class began in mid-January. Onim’s responsibilities have included supervising lieutenants who direct the engine crews, coordinating class activities with FSTC staff, and serving as the liaison between the class and course coordinators.

“Janet showed a tremendous amount of leadership in working with the entire class. She demonstrated the ideal traits necessary for a successful career as a firefighter. She also displayed exceptional organizational skills which kept the class on track with their daily assignments. She was just one of the best, if not THE best, class captains we’ve ever had.”
Onim has a master’s degree in information science from The University of Texas at Arlington and a bachelor’s degree in education from Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya.
Since its inception in 1989, TCC’s FSTC has graduated about 1,650 students, with a state certification examination pass rate of more than 98 percent. Departments with graduates in the current class are: Dalworthington Gardens, DFW Airport, Edgecliff Village, Everman, Grand Prairie, Irving, Keene, Krum, Sansom Park and White Settlement.
