Chicago, Broadway’s longest-running American musical, offers a splashy, raucous look at 1920s fame, justice and the media machine at 7 p.m. April 22-25 and 2 p.m. April 25 at the Northeast Drama Playhouse at Tarrant County College Northeast.
In Roaring Twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap — until he learns he has been duped and turns on Roxie.
Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream: fame, fortune and acquittal.
This sharp-edged satire features an unforgettable score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.
“In this production, we’ve leaned into the idea that these characters are always performing, shaping their stories to survive and stay in the spotlight, while still searching for the humanity underneath the ‘razzle dazzle,’ ” said director Jacob Blakeman.
“At its core, Chicago reflects something deeply human: the desire to be seen, to be valued, and to shape a version of ourselves that the world will notice. There is who we are, and there is who we want to be, and sometimes the distance between the two leads to morally questionable choices.”
