Forensics Teams Big Winners at Newbie Novice Tournament

Congratulations to Trinity River and Northeast campuses’ forensics teams who recently took top honors at the Newbie Novice Speech and Debate Tournament at Northeast Campus in Hurst Sept. 23-25.

In their first competition, Trinity River’s 10-member Honey Badgers team was the first place Debate Sweepstakes winner and finished third place overall.

Other Trinity River debate winners were John Sims and Stephanie Darnell, first place, and Kristin Taylor and David Ross, third place, in Parliamentary Debate.  Winning in the Overall Debate Speaker competition were: Kristin Taylor, first place, and David Ross, fourth place.

Excelling in individual events for Trinity River were John Sims, first place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Katie Hurrell, sixth place in Program Oral Interpretation.

Northeast also had two students win individual competitions. Alexander Alatorre won fourth place in Informative Speaking and Rafael Gonzalez placed sixth in Impromptu Speaking.

A total of 83 students competed in 172 total event entries. Other schools present were Central Texas College, Howard Payne University, San Antonio College, San Jacinto College North, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Southern University, Tyler Junior College and University of the Southwest.

Helping TCC students prepare for their outstanding performances at Trinity River were coaches Phil Morgan and Irene Thrower. At Northeast, coaches are Lisa Benedetti, Jacob Cabe, Paulinda Krug, Sean Stewart and Stephen Thomas.
