FORT WORTH, Texas (May 5, 2011)
The Tarrant County College Academy of Mathematics and Engineering, a college preparatory academy, has received funding for the third year from the Sid W. Richardson Foundation.
The Sid W. Richardson Foundation has granted $50,000 to the AME, which targets underrepresented student populations for participation in mathematics and engineering. The AME’s primary goal is to increase the number of students who are technologically literate and highly trained to enter the local, regional and national workforce. Students also are prepared to transfer to a four-year college or university.
Last summer, 244 middle and high school students from area independent school districts were served in the pre-college program. In addition, 630 students participated in the college career program for high school juniors and seniors, and college freshmen and sophomores majoring in mathematics or pre-engineering.
The Sid W. Richardson Foundation initially provided a $100,000 grant in 2008 to support the first two years of AME. “This is a very important program,” said Foundation Executive Vice President Val Wilkie, Jr. “We are pleased to be able to participate once again.”
