Tarrant County College Student Construction Team Awarded National ”Rookie of the Year” Honor

ARLINGTON, Texas (Mar. 10, 2011)

A Tarrant County College Southeast Campus student team earned “Rookie of the Year” for their work in construction design earlier this semester at the International Home Builders Show.

The event in Orlando, Fla., featured more than 50 secondary schools, colleges, and universities, which competed in several categories related to Residential Construction Management.

The TCC team, competing for the first time ever, was comprised of students Thomas Gunter, Joshua Barnes, Mark Oaxaca and Stephen Gordon, all currently enrolled in the college’s Construction Management Program. Gunter also received the “Outstanding Student” Award. The team was led by Orlando Bagcal, assistant professor of Construction Management and program coordinator.

“Their experience in this event has given them the opportunity to demonstrate their learned knowledge and skills as well as to interact with the experts in the construction industry,” said Bagcal.

In the Residential Construction Management competition, each team was to develop a proposal to build a house in North Carolina. The team prepared a package that included a detailed estimate, schedule, working drawings and a change order of the project. The team then orally presented their proposal to a panel of five experts.
