Summit Encourages College-Bound Culture

Students and parents of the Fort Worth Independent School District spent Saturday, Oct. 30, learning how to build a college-bound culture within their schools, families and communities at TCC’s Trinity River Campus during the Eighth Annual iDreamiLearnIWin Family Summit.

As many as 700 participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, talk with Fort Worth firemen and handle their equipment, and hear first-hand how successful professionals overcame challenges to  achieve their goals.

Texas Sen. Wendy Davis, an attorney, stressed her triumph over adversities and pursuit of a postsecondary education in her keynote address. Sen. Davis and Fort Worth ISD Board Member Christene Moss received the I Dream Awards for their dedication to families and education. Trinity River Campus President Tahita Fulkerson and FWISD Supt. Melody Johnson welcomed summit attendees and expressed gratitude for their participation.

TCC’s Web Content Editor Susan Ragland offered one of the more than 30 workshops available to parents and K-12 students. Her workshop, “Science: It’s Not Just for Geeks Anymore” was one of the Math/Science workshops.

Other TCC presenters included TR Student Development Services Director Michael Baumgardner, Tech Prep Coordinator Lou Davenport, TR Learning Center Coordinator Steven Lemons and TR Counseling Director Louann Schulze. Sessions also focused on Overcoming Obstacles and Adversities, Time Management, Technology, Health /Wellness and Career Exploration.
