Tommy Awtry is Southeast Campus’ new dean of mathematics, science and health and physical education. Awtry comes to TCC from Louisiana State University-Alexandria, where he was chair of the department of mathematics and physical sciences.
During his tenure as department chair, LSUA transitioned from a two-year school to a four-year university. Awtry started teaching at LSUA 15 years ago as an assistant mathematics professor. He has also taught at LSU-Baton Rouge and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La.
Awtry was instrumental in training classroom teachers in Louisiana. He secured several grants that allowed him to provide in-service workshops and mentor local elementary and middle-school teachers in reform mathematics. Each four-week workshop provided participants with content and teaching development.
While at LSUA, Awtry gained two Endowed Professorships, the 2009 LSUA Boss of the Year Award, and the 2008 Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics Outstanding College Mathematics Teacher Award. He also served in a leadership role in LSUA’s Dual Enrollment initiative, as well as in the development of its Transitions Developmental Program and was a member of its Summer Schedule Revision Committee.
Awtry graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from LSU-Shreveport. He earned a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics as well as a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, both from LSUBR.
Be sure to take the time to welcome TCC’s newest dean.
