FORT WORTH, Texas — Forty aspiring teachers will have more help turning their associate degrees into bachelor’s degrees — and their work with young children into lasting careers.
The Tarrant County College Foundation is offering 40 scholarships for students enrolling in TCC’s new Bachelor of Applied Science in early childhood education and teaching, the College’s first bachelor’s degree program. The scholarships will help eligible students cover education-related expenses, including tuition and books.
“I am thankful to the TCC Foundation and its board members for this investment in the next generation of educators,” Chancellor Elva LeBlanc said. “Public school classrooms and child care centers need more qualified teachers, and many of the people ready to answer that call work with young children every day. These scholarships make sure cost doesn’t stand in the way of their career goals.”
The opportunity is immediate. Classes begin Oct. 12 at TCC South (5301 Campus Drive in Fort Worth) with the College’s second eight-week fall session. The first cohort is expected to include about 20 students.
“At the TCC Foundation, we’re fortunate to work with generous donors who believe in the potential of our students,” said Chief Development Officer Josh Stewart. “These scholarships give students greater opportunity to pursue their education, achieve their goals and build a brighter future.”
The BAS in early childhood education and teaching is designed for students who have completed an Associate of Arts in teaching, an Associate of Applied Science in early childhood education, or another qualifying associate degree with directed electives. The two-year program prepares graduates for teacher certification in Early Childhood through Grade 3 and Early Childhood through Grade 6. Classes combine in-person and online learning, so working early childhood professionals can advance their education while staying in their jobs.
“Scholarship support means students can take the next step toward certification without having to choose between their education and their families’ needs,” said Shereah Taylor-Love, TCC South dean of the Human and Public Service Pathway.
