Statement by TCC Acting Chancellor LeBlanc on school shooting in Uvalde, TX

Acting Chancellor Elva LeBlanc released the following statement on May 25:

By now, you will have heard the news of the unspeakable mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and yesterday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. I, along with all of Tarrant County College District, extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their families.

These types of senseless tragedies cause us to reflect on the safety of ourselves, you the students, our employees and our community. This morning, I met with key leaders from the TCC Police Department and the Department Emergency Management teams to discuss our current safety and security strategies and how we can further improve.

I want you to feel assured that TCC is committed to a culture of campus safety. Here are just some of the practices and strategies we have in place.

  • Trained police officers at each of the main campuses
  • Emergency & Safety Actions training mandatory for all new employees
  • myTCC Alerts, a mass notification system that all students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in, per State of Texas requirements for email/voice emergency notifications
  • Special Response Team within the TCC Police Department to respond when available to critical incidents
  • The free Alertus app (available on iOS and Android), which allows the Emergency Management team to notify faculty, staff and students of emergency incidents; these messages also appear on TCC computers, desk phones, hallway beacons and digital signage across campuses
  • TCC Police and Emergency Management’s regular participation in practice drills; you can view drills completed over the last year in the 2021 Annual Security Report
  • Outdoor warning systems on each campus to alert the TCC community of inclement weather incidents.

So, what can you do to help TCC maintain a culture of campus safety? It is each of our responsibilities to stay aware, stay educated and when you see something that doesn’t feel right, contact campus police at 817-515-8911.

If you have questions or concerns, please connect with the TCC Police Department or the the Department of Emergency Management.

Together, we can ensure TCC remains a safe and secure place for you to learn and grow.
