TCC’s tagline is Success Within Reach. Our latest graduates have reached that milestone in their educational journey at TCC. In this series, we want to introduce you to some of them.
Tamia Johnson chose TCC for its financial value. “What made me choose TCC is the opportunity to save myself from debt within my first two years,” she said. Following her graduation from high school, she didn’t feel prepared mentally or financially to attend a four-year university. She says TCC allowed her to grow academically, physically and mentally.
Mental health is important to Tamia and a priority in her education. “My educational journey consisted of learning how to place boundaries to protect my mental health,” she said. “Mental health can be the biggest challenge for the college student life, along with learning how to navigate and care for it can be a journey.” Tamia says to protect her own mental health, she needed to change her living environment. “When I did, I noticed better focus and growth in my academics.”
Tamia says her greatest accomplishment since attending TCC is graduating with her associate degree, but also getting accepted in the University of North Texas with scholarships and a free ride to finishing her bachelor’s degree.
Once she completes her education, Tamia has another goal—build mental health facilities in low-income areas. “These facilities will be a safe space for the community for all demographics that need extra assistance,” she said. “Our facilities will have professional care such as therapists, after-school programs for the children, workshops for finances and teen mothers, and basic workforce skills.”
