Keep the kids busy this summer! TCC summer youth camps go virtual

With online learning at area schools ending, Tarrant County parents may be looking for ways to keep their kids entertained and active this summer. Fortunately, Tarrant County College has revamped its summer programming and is now offering its College for Kids learning experiences through digital platforms for kids in grades 1 through 12.    

Registration is now open for 2020 College for Kids programs, which include academic, arts and crafts, science and technology, and health and fitness courses designed to encourage and challenge students to reach their full potential. All courses will be delivered via Google Classroom. The full camp list includes:  

  • Coding, July 6 to 9. Open to students entering grades 4 through 6 and grades 7 through 9; learn about computer languages and programming and unleash your creativity. Kids will engage in a game-like environment that will be interactive, artistic and a fun learning experience (No prior computer knowledge required).
  • Fun Fitness, July 6 to 9 (week 1), July 13 to 16 (week 2), July 20 to 23 (week 3) and July 27 to 30 (week 4). Open to students entering grades 1 through 12; move, groove and work out with a variety of fitness activities and exercises. These workouts are fun, helps build muscle, strength and endurance, while keeping your body fit. 
  • Ingenious Engineering, July 6 to 16. Open to students entering grades 5 through 8; learn about the main elements of engineering concepts, design and construction. Experience a career in engineering with our hands-on activities and demonstrations. 
  • Photography, July 6 to 23. Open to students entering grades 1 through 4 and 5 through 8; develop the skills necessary to research, compose and capture digital photographic projects in a hands-on course. No significant prior experience in photography is assumed. 
  • Sign Language, July 6 to 23. Open to students entering grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8; learn basic American Sign Language skills, both receptively and expressively. Start off with ABC handshapes, building vocabulary and practicing simple sentences. Engage in several activities to build language skills, plus learn about Deaf people, Deaf culture, Deaf history and Deaf and Blind people.
  • Family STEM Exploration, July 6 to 30. Open to students entering grades 1 through 12; explore the wonders of STEM with family through these family STEM activities and challenges.
  • Arts & Humanities Career Exploration, July 13 to 16. Open to students entering grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8; explore the area of Arts and Humanities to introduce and educate the students regarding degrees, certificates and careers offered in the fields of dance, music, art, speech and theatre.  
  • STEM Space Explorers, July 13 to 16. Open to students entering grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8; explore the degrees, certificates and careers offered in the STEM field. Participate in activities related to STEM including engineering, math and space travel. Interactive, project-based activities will be included as at-home design assignments.
  • Beginning Spanish, July 13 to 23. Open to students entering grades 3 through 5; this is a course in Spanish conversation with emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking skills. Activities will be based on vocabulary topics of general student interest and ability.
  • AutoCAD Beginning and Intermediate, July to 23 or July 27 to 30. Open to students entering grades 6 through 12; In Beginning I and II students will learn TinkerCAD. In Intermediate I and II students will learn about SolidWorks. In both AutoCAD programs, students will learn to design their own objects!
  • Business & Industry: Career Exploration, July 20 to 23. Open to students entering grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8; Explore the area of Business & Industry to learn about degrees, certificates and careers offered in the field. Become familiar with making a business plan and take virtual tours of related TCC departments such as the TCC Northeast Radio and Television Studio. Guest speakers will make presentations and host online Q & A sessions.
  • Public Services: Career Exploration, July to 23. Open to students in grades 3 through 5 and 6 through 8; explore the degrees, certificates and careers offered in the field of public service. Education, Government and Human Services will be covered. Guest speakers will make presentations and host an online Q & A sessions. 
  • Digital Draw Paint & Sketch, July 20 to 30. Open to students in grades 3 through 5; explore various techniques of painting and drawing in a virtual method. Students will learn how to take their hand drawn art and transform it into digital art.
  • AutoCAD Beginning II & Intermediate II. Open to students entering grades 6 through 12; In Beginning I and II students will learn TinkerCAD. In Intermediate I and II students will learn about SolidWorks. In both AutoCAD programs, students will learn to design their own objects.

Prior to the start of classes, students will be sent a welcome email with information on how to login and get started. Students will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection. High speed broadband access (LAN, Cable or DSL) is highly recommended for the optimal learning experience.
