New rules defining eligible dependents for health, dental and dependent term life insurance will go into effect Sept. 1.
Ineligible dependents include former spouses, married children, grandchildren who are not claimed on your federal income tax return, children who are not related to you by blood or marriage for which you do not have legal guardianship, or children who are over age 25, unless they are disabled.
More details about eligible dependents are available on the Eligible Dependent Comparison Chart.
Audits of dependent coverage are scheduled in fall 2010. Members found to carry ineligible dependents could have their insurance coverage terminated.
Dependents who do not meet eligibility requirements should be dropped during annual enrollment, July 5-30. Ineligible dependents may be dropped online from the ERS homepage. Click on the View My Benefits-User Login button. The button to login is located in the upper right corner of the homepage. Dependent changes also may be made by calling ERS Customer Service at 877-275-4377.
